Electric scooter rules are changing

Remember our tips last week on how to use an electric scooter (‘e-scooter’) lawfully?

This past Monday the Queensland Transport Minister announced new e-scooter rules coming into effect from 1 November, 2022 to improve safety.  The changes include:

  • Reducing rider speed limits from 25 km/h to 12 km/h; and

  • Bells, or a similar warning device, are to be installed on an e-scooter.

Speeding, using a mobile phone while riding and riding on prohibited roads will also be considered ‘high-risk offences’.  There will be increased penalties for these high-risk offences, however the exact nature of these penalties is yet to be detailed.
